Funding for training

Heritage Alliance funding directory

Managed by The Heritage Alliance and supported by the Country Houses Foundation, the Directory is a free, easy to use guide to potential sources of support, financial and otherwise, for anyone seeking to undertake projects related to the heritage of the United Kingdom. As well as detailing sources of grants from trusts and foundations, the Directory also lists organisations offering loan finance, awards, scholarships and other "in kind" resources.

This Directory covers wider categories of heritage include historic landscapes, parks and gardens, churchyards and cemeteries, industrial heritage, archives, historic churches, museums, archaeology, environmental, heritage skills and conservation.

Essex County Council bursary place

Essex County Council are to continue offering fully funded place on their courses via the City and County Bursary, which will be providing funding for sixth year to help address the problem of the traditional building skills shortage through the bursary scheme, offering free places on the Traditional Building Skills courses.

The bursary provides an opportunity for acquiring experience of craft building techniques, relevant to historic buildings, for those in the building industry who otherwise may find it financially prohibitive to attend. It will be particularly suitable for independent builders and small contractors.

Applicants must:

  • be working in the built environment, and
  • show a commitment to expanding their knowledge of the built heritage sector

If you have any questions or are interested in requesting an application form please contact Katie Seabright by email or on 01245 437672.

NHTG bursary scheme

The National Heritage Training Groupís bursary scheme, Enhancing Traditional Building Skills in England, is funded through the Heritage Lottery Fundís Skills for the Future programme.

Launched in 2009, Skills for the Future is a one-off HLF programme supporting organisations across the UK to create new heritage training placement opportunities. NHTG has been awarded the largest single amount to provide high-quality, work-based training and skills development opportunities across England to equip people for a career in the built heritage sector. This will take place in the form of 60 variable-length bursaries working on live heritage sites. These bursaries are being delivered across the country by the regional heritage coordinators.

We will soon have a number of bursaries ready to offer you in the London Region, are also looking for additional placement providers and are able to accommodate a limited number of self referral applicants, who have secured a placement for which they need bursary funding.

This bursary scheme is all about finding those people who are passionate about working on the countryís traditional building stock so enthusiasm and potential are the most important skills we are looking for in prospective trainees.
